A lot of effort went into the details.. Even the easiest mode is too hard for me.I'm not a stranger to fighting games or brawling games, and the premise of beating your foes without striking them was appealing to me. In practice, Way of the Passive Fist feels far more like a rhythm game than a brawling game. This doesn't bother me; on the contrary, I was hoping Way could help me with my horrible timing. The base gameplay is challenging and fun. You synchronize your blocking, dodging, and finisher movements with the movements and attacks of your foes. Some foes only use 1 type of attack, others use ranged or grapple attacks, and each set of enemies has a different rhythm. I've never played a game where I was forced to vary my input timing so much and so randomly, and I've mostly enjoyed it.The problems are the difficulty modes and the bosses. I got to the 3rd area of story levels on the default medium difficulty and, while I struggled with the bosses for areas 1 and 2, the task of beating said bosses didn't feel impossible. However, in the 3rd area, I've run into a boss I simply cannot beat. His life bar depletes too slowly, he has an attack that is quick, high damage, and may only be dodged with a very well-timed dash, and other foes are always present to attack you. I just can't figure out how to deplete his life bar faster, and after dying a number of times I decided to give easy mode a shot. The easy mode in this game sucks because of how similar it is to normal mode. I took a little less damage from foes, foes might've been a little less aggressive, but I didn't notice much of a difference. My experience with the 3rd area boss was certainly the same; his life bar depleted at the same rate, his attacks appeared to come at the same rate, and there were the same number of foes with him and they seemed just as aggressive. If I was any worse at this game, and I encountered the 3rd area boss, I'd simply have to throw up my hands and quit. He's too hard, even on Easy! I really want to like this game. However, I very much cannot do so now, just like I cannot recommend this game to anyone but diehard rhythm and brawling game fans.. When i saw the trailer my first thought was "is this a joke?". A beat'em up that forces you to drain enemy's stamina by blocking and dodging their attacks, instead of kicking their♥♥♥♥♥with flashy combos? Ridiculous! But you know what? IT WORKS! Its FUN! And that comes from a player, that tends to avoid that kind of playstile in every beat'em up/ slasher game he plays. Great job Household Games! Now, the way it works is, instead of memorizing your characters combos and moves, you memorize combos and moves of your enemies. Its totally possible to play without memorizing the entire combos once you have a grasp on core mechanics, but after beating a certain enemy type once or twice you will naturally learn their attack pattern anyway. It sort of becomes a rhythm game then. So, um, if you like beat'em ups you should totally play this game. Oh, and the soundtrack is awesome!. Within two levels, instead of fighting carefully measured enemy attack patterns, I was cumbersomely dodging out of the way of a big laser being delivered by an off-screen bad. The laser kept going. It is not fun to dodge big lasers when I want to be fighting dudes. When I asked the devs about this on Twitter, they said to turn the damage down. The damage is not the problem. I can beat those levels. I could probably beat them without taking damage, if I had enough patience. But the actual act of playing them--trudging through same-looking scenery, may-as-well-not-be-there writing, and game mechanics that even with only several active buttons to engage with still manage to feel obtuse and frustrating. This is a bad review. I am in a bad mood. I do not recommend this game. Thank you.. Insanely fun and very enjoyable. Really brings new life to a classic genre. I'm hardly a quarter of the way in and I'm hooked. Gameplay is fluid and fast paced and the music is amazing. 10/10.. So i just finished this game on warrior and started a master playthrough. DIS♥♥♥♥♥♥DOPE. If your feeling like buying this, GET IT.. Its parry and dodging intensive gameplay with an emphasis on timing is reminiscent of Furi. Was an interesting experience for sure, but there's just not enough. The core gameplay is excellent. The setting and fighting style makes you feel just like Kenshiro. Precision and patience are rewarded with satisfying fighting game-esque blockstrings which exhaust your opponents. These charge your special-meter which you can use to unleash a powerful punch and grab move (yes, contrary to the game's coverage you actually do attack in this game) which adds a resource management mechanic that rewards efficiency. Its parry and dodging intensive gameplay with an emphasis on timing is reminiscent of Furi. Were there more enemies (9 types with 23 variations), longer levels, and maybe an extra move or too this game would be a must play. As it stands now, the game is too short and does not have enough content. As good as it is, the quality of the gameplay does not carry the 3-4 hour length at a £11 price. What is a shame is that the developers clearly focussed in the wrong areas. At least three levels have gimmicky level hazards which are inconsistent and frustrating to play around. Of the five boss battles, four are horrendous to play on account of them practically being gimmicky stage hazards themselves rather than intense duels. The final boss is anticlimactically easy (once you figure out his gimmicky stage hazard attack pattern). To the game's credit it has found a brilliant spot for its difficulty. Intense enough to be visceral yet forgiving enough to be approachable. Unfortunately though it never really "turns it up to eleven" with the rapid test of reaction time and timing I was hoping for.In conclusion, play this game if you have the chance or if you think you'll like it. It's short and sweet, and with what content there is it doesn't overstay its welcome. I personally find it a bit too expensive for a game you can beat in one sitting, but maybe you're the kind of person who gets replay value out of perfectionist achievements and limited death playthroughs.. Fantastic game. It may seem simple in a gameplay video but it is actually fast paced, exciting and fun. There are enough curve balls thrown at the player to always keep those reactions sharp. I'd gladly pay for more chapters, and I'm not even close to done with what is offered already. If you like parrying, fighting, beat em ups or anything that has to do with a fist, this is for you.. Took me two hours to get the pun.More seriously, this is a great side-scrolling brawler for those who have a hard time with regular brawlers like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon. The focus being defensive really makes a difference, and I love that you can set several options to tailor the game to your playstyle.
